Course Summary

Major tenets of Hinduism, with comparisons to the Christian faith


The course provides both description and analysis of the Hindu faith system. It is organized in three modules: (1) The Essence of Hinduism, (2) The Vedas, and (3) Analyzing Hinduism. 3 semester hours of graduate credit.

Objectives

• Summarize underlying assumptions, and major tenets of Hinduism

• Contrast concepts of God and human destiny within Hindu and Christian faiths

• Evaluate the contrasting beliefs and practices found in Hinduism and Christianity

Credit for the course requires a score of 70% or greater on three multiple-choice examinations and two essays.  The five graded elements are valued at 20% each.  A sample multiple-choice problem is given below.

Christianity became a major influence in India (A) in the days of the apostles, (B) in the fourth century due to the monastic movement, (C) after Islam entered the northern part of India, (D) during colonial days.
