Course Summary

Interpretation and application of the Former and Latter Prophets

The course is given to historical-grammatical exegesis but includes an added element related to fitting application in a modern setting.  It is organized in three modules: The Former Prophets (Module 1), Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel (Module 2), and The Book of the Twelve (Module 3). The course is valued at 3 semester hours of graduate credit.

Course Objectives

1.  Analyze Israel’s condition in relation to the covenant with Yahweh and cultural, political, religious, and social contexts.

2. Distinguish the contents of each composition included in The Prophets.

3. Judge the value of The Prophets for Christian use.

Credit.  Credit for the course requires a score of 70% or greater on three multiple choice examinations and two essays. Each graded element is valued at 20% of the final grade.  A sample multiple-choice problem is given below.

The book of Joshua is organized (A) around central events that describe how Canaan was possessed by Israel, (B) chronologically, giving fairly equal space to each of the three decades covered in the book, (C) topically according to major subjects such as the role of priest, prophets, and judges, (D) in a manner not described above.
