Course Summary

Interpretation and application of the Writings: Ruth, Lamentations, the Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Esther. Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel

The course is given to historical-grammatical exegesis but includes an added element related to fitting application in a modern setting.  It is organized in three modules: The Five Scrolls (Module 1), Job, Psalms, and Proverbs (Module 2), and Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel (Module 3). The course is valued at 3 semester hours of graduate credit.

Course Objectives

1. Distinguish the contents of each composition included in The Writings

2. Synthesize The Writings as to purpose and themes

3. Judge the value of The Writings for Christian use

Credit.  The course grade is the average of three module exams, a research paper, and an essay. Credit for the course requires a score of 70% or greater on each of the five graded elements, which count for 20 percent each toward the course grade.  A sample exam problem is given below.

The book of Job is organized (A) around central events that describe the story of Job's life, (B) chronologically around the events covered in the book, (C) topically according to major subjects such as the role of priests, prophets, and judges. (D) around cycles of speeches bounded with a prologue and epilogue.
