Course Summary

The language of the Old Testament, with illustrations of its usefulness to a study of the Old Testament 

An introduction to the Hebrew language, its basic grammar and vocabulary, and issues of translation and exegesis of original biblical texts. The course is organized in 3 modules: (1) First Encounter, (2) Resources for Working with Hebrew Texts, and (3) The Dead Sea Scrolls. 3 undergraduate semester credits.  Credit not allowed with former BRS 9.

Objectives 

• Describe the primary language of the Old Testament (Module 1

• Discuss critical tools for working with a Hebrew text (Module 2)

• Analyze the Dead Sea Scrolls (Module 3)

Credit.  Credit for the course requires a score of 70% or greater on three multiple-choice examinations and two research papers. A sample exam problem is given below.

The earliest of Old Testament manuscripts dates from (A) the 2nd century B.C.E, (B) the 4th century, (C) the 5th century, (D) the 15th century.
